Poor, Minority Children Less Likely to be Screened

- by Michael Greer, staff medical writer -- Many young children - particularly those who are African American or Medicaid-eligible - have not received blood lead screenings and may be at risk for dangerously elevated levels of the toxic metal, according to U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention researchers.

R.B. Kaufmann and colleagues conducted a study to "estimate the proportion of children one to five years of age who received blood lead testing during 1988-1994 and to assess whether predictors of testing coincided with predictors of elevated blood lead levels." The results of their research were published in the journal Pediatrics.
