Survey Says Doctors, Obese Patients Don't Discuss Weight

Even though obesity is second only to smoking as the leading cause of preventable death in the U.S., 57% of overweight people have never had a discussion about weight with their doctors, according to a Roper Starch survey released April 2, 2001, that examined the level of communication about weight between doctors and patients.

In addition, the survey found that 62% of overweight people do not believe that their weight poses a serious health risk, even though being overweight or obese is a significant risk factor for heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.
