Folate Fortification And Other Factors Have Reduced Neural Tube Defects In U.S.

Since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authorized adding folic acid to grain products, there has been a 19% decrease in birth defects known as neural tube defects (NTDs) in newborns across the United States, though researchers are not sure if the decrease is solely attributable to the fortification.
