Education Program Reduces Antibiotic Use In Children

Medical experts have identified antibiotic resistance as an emerging threat to the public health. But a program that simultaneously educates parents and health care providers about appropriate antibiotic use in children can result in a significant reduction in their use, according to a new study published in the July 2001 issue of the journal Pediatrics.

Researchers tested an educational outreach program for families and physicians, in children under six years old, based on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention principles of judicious antibiotic use. Twelve pediatric practices caring for approximately 10,000 children took part in the study.
