Coinfection Increases HIV Replication

by Michael Greer, senior medical writer - Patients infected with HIV and tuberculosis display higher levels of viral replication at coinfection sites, according to researchers in the United States.

Stephen D. Lawn and colleagues at Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta and Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland conducted a study to evaluate "the impact of the host inflammatory microenvironment associated with localized tuberculosis (TB) on human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) replication within lymphocytes and macrophages in vivo."

HIV replication occurred much more rapidly in the presence of active tuberculosis...
