Alabama Death Makes Fifth Nationwide This Year

A 44-year-old man has become the first person to die from West Nile virus in Alabama, state health officials confirmed, bringing the total nationwide to five.

The Jefferson County resident, who was not identified, died October 30, 2001, after becoming infected in late August, said state veterinarian Bill Johnston. The man is the fifth person in the nation to die from the mosquito-borne virus this year, following a a 70-year-old man in Massachusetts, a 45-year-old man in New Jersey, a 71-year-old woman in Georgia, and a Connecticut woman in her 90s.

A second Alabama case was also confirmed, in a 79-year-old Jefferson County man, but he has recovered....
