CDC assesses susceptibility testing practices in U.S.

Antimicrobial resistance is rapidly changing for pneumococci, and recommendations for susceptibility testing probably will continue to change, according to new data in the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (May 10, 2002;51(RR-6)).

Most clinical laboratories surveyed in February 2000 were using appropriate methods for pneumococcal susceptibility testing; however, some inconsistencies with the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) guidelines were noted.
