WHO finds bad health linked to poverty

Poverty remains the single largest cause of bad health in Europe, the World Health Organization said September 17, 2002, as it presented a snapshot of the health situation in its vast European region.

The report covering 51 countries in the agency's European sphere and 870 million people concluded that while the overall levels of health are among the highest in the world, gaps were widening among the countries.

"All major determinants of health are linked to social and economic factors," said Marc Danzon, WHO's regional director as he presented the WHO's European Health Report, which is published every 2 years.
