Infectious diseases can only be tackled by addressing social inequalities

The relationship between infectious disease and socioeconomic factors has been recognized for hundreds of years, and yet much more needs to be done to address the social inequalities that fuel the spread of infection, according to the U.K.'s Public Health Laboratory Service.

Professor Brian Duerden, director of the PHLS, noted that several papers presented at the annual conference this year highlighted the disproportionate burden that some infections place on certain social groups.
