Congress boosts Southern bioterrorism project

Here's a congressional hint for Southeastern colleges competing for research grants to study biological threats: Stop competing and start cooperating.

Congress seemed to send that message in February by writing a $600,000 check for a new program based at Atlanta's Emory University that coordinates projects among the region's academic institutions and the nation's public health agencies.

Such cooperation is rare in the race for federal grants, but the sizable first-year offering to the Southeastern Center for Emerging Biologic Threats could encourage more of it - particularly in the area of homeland security.
