New European agency proposed to tackle future outbreaks, bioterrorist threats

The European Commission proposed setting up its own European Center for Disease Prevention and Control to give the E.U.'s head office more powers to tackle diseases like SARS or bioterrorist threats.

The E.U. health and consumer protection commissioner, David Byrne, said this spring's SARS outbreak across Asia and in Canada was a "wake-up call" for Europe to be better prepared.

"While SARS now might seem like yesterday's news, it cannot and must not be forgotten," Byrne said. "It serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerability of the global society to new or recurring biological threats to public health," he said.
