Infection more serious for elderly

Older people who become infected with the dengue virus are more likely to need hospitalization, to suffer more severe forms of the infection, and to die compared to any other age group except infants.

The findings are a part of the first research study that analyzed the clinical manifestations of dengue infection among people 65 and older. The findings are described in an English-language article in the Pan American Journal of Public Health, a journal published by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO).
