Researchers to take blood samples from victims for study

Researchers from the Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) recently made a trip to Wisconsin to study people who contracted monkeypox in an effort to learn more about the virus.

Eighteen cases of monkeypox were confirmed in the state, and 20 others were considered probable cases - the first and highest number of cases of any state in the outbreak this spring, the first time the disease struck outside Africa.

Dr. Mark Slifka is leading a team of researchers from the OHSU Vaccine & Gene Therapy Institute, in Portland. He said more people may have been exposed to the virus here than reported, but strong immune systems may have helped them ward off...
