CRP increases in children as weight increases

There is a significant association between body mass index and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in children, according to a new study.

"This finding suggests that the inflammatory component of heart disease might be present very early in life," said Earl S. Ford, MD, MPH, medical officer in the Division of Adult and Community Health, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta.

Body mass index (BMI) is a measure of overall body fatness. Among the study participants, blood levels of CRP increased as BMI increased.
