Physicians to spread word on negative effects of TV, drug ads

The Massachusetts Medical Society voted on November 8, 2003, to take steps to inform the public of the potentially harmful health consequences of violent and sexually explicit television programs, as well as television advertising for prescription drugs.

The Massachusetts medical association plans to reach out through the media and through its Web sites and by working through related organizations, such as hospitals and health plans, said Tom Sullivan, MD, the society president. The society also plans to talk to hospitals about limiting some of the TV programs that can be watched by people in the hospital.
