Medicare increases reimbursement coverage for DeBakey LVAD

MicroMed Technology, Inc., announced that the U.S. Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has decided to increase reimbursement coverage for the MicroMed DeBakey VAD, which is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for pivotal clinical trials in the patient indications of bridge-to-transplant and destination therapy.

The CMS coverage would link the DeBakey VAD to the CMS payment code Diagnosis Related Group (DRG) 525. Initially, the DeBakey VAD was to be reimbursed under DRG's 104/105 which allowed for approximately $26-35,000 of hospital reimbursement.
