Medicaid being misused by some in Kentucky for prescription-drug pedaling

Some Medicaid recipients in Kentucky are using their benefits to sell prescription drugs illegally for profit or to supply their own addictions, authorities say.

Police and prosecutors in rural Kentucky say the state- and federally funded program that helps more than 670,000 of the state's elderly, poor, and disabled is a significant source of drugs that have ravaged the region.

"It's just no question the Medicaid system, which is strapped for funds, is financing a large degree of this stuff," said Larry Rogers, commonwealth's attorney for Wayne and Russell counties.
