Iowa governor seeks HHS authorization for pilot program

Iowa governor Tom Vilsack on January 22, 2004, asked U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) officials to authorize a pilot program that would make Iowa the first state to reimport lower cost prescription drugs from Canada.

"I believe that we have a unique opportunity to test the concept of importation with the implementation of a pilot program in Iowa," Vilsack said in a letter to HSS Secretary Tommy Thompson.
