U.S. Treasury secretary calls for lawsuit damage cap

U.S. Treasury Secretary John Snow called February 18, 2004, for caps on damages in medical malpractice lawsuits to keep down soaring health care costs.

A meeting with small business owners in Eugene was the last stop for top Bush administration officials on a 2-day swing through the Pacific Northwest, a region that has been hard-hit by high unemployment in the past few years.

Oregon and Washington are also both considered swing states in the upcoming presidential election, and Democrats have dismissed the trip as a costly publicity ploy.
