U.S. HHS commissioner hasn't given up hope on drug pooling plan

U.S. Health and Human Services Commissioner John Stephen said February 24, 2004, he remains hopeful the federal government will allow states to pool resources to buy medicine for Medicaid patients.

On February 23, 2004, the Bush Administration verbally rejected a program that has saved Michigan and Vermont millions of dollars by allowing them to negotiate jointly to get lower prescription prices from drug companies.

Last week, New Hampshire announced it would try to join with those states to negotiate the deep discounts and rebates on drugs.
