FDA approval granted for Ketek (telithromycin) tablets

Aventis (AVE) announced that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Ketek (telithromycin) tablets to treat acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis; acute bacterial sinusitis; and mild to moderate community-acquired pneumonia, including those infections caused by multidrug resistant Streptococcus pneumoniae, in patients age 18 and older.

Ketek, the first in a new class of antibiotics known as the ketolides, was specifically designed to treat community-acquired respiratory tract infections (RTIs).
