Northwestern records on animal research inquiry subpoenaed by U.S. government

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has subpoenaed records related to Northwestern University's management and tracking of animals used in research, university officials said.

The subpoena "appears to go to the animal care issues" that had been the focus of an earlier investigation by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Northwestern spokesman Alan Cubbage said.

"What's at issue is the review and record-keeping procedures in the animal care area," Cubbage said. "It's definitely not about any mistreatment of animals or humans."
