Survey: Most think drugs should be prescribed for FDA-approved uses only

"Off-label prescribing," the use of prescription drugs for treating medical conditions for which the drugs were not originally approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), has been in the news lately.

This is probably not an issue that many people have thought about, and if they have, there is no consensus about it. A 51% to 31% majority believes, wrongly, that a doctor can prescribe drugs only for the diseases for which they have been approved (51%), and that

1) A 48% to 31% plurality believes that doctors "should not be allowed" to prescribe a drug for diseases for which that drug has not been approved by the FDA, and
