USDA expresses confidence in safety of U.S. beef supply

Dr. John Clifford, Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, said in a published statement in late June that the department had been notified that an "inconclusive BSE test result was received on a rapid screening test used as part of our enhanced BSE surveillance program." Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is commonly called mad cow disease.

Tissue samples were sent to the USDA National Veterinary Services Laboratories where tests were conducted. "The carcass has been accounted for and is not in the food supply," Clifford said in the statement.
