Japan gives Cambodia nearly US$25 million for healthcare

Japan said August 11, 2004, it will give Cambodia nearly US$25 million to help eradicate land mines and improve healthcare in the impoverished Southeast Asian nation. Cambodian Foreign Minister Hor Namhong and Japanese Ambassador Fumiaki Takahashi signed an agreement for the 2.7 billion yen (US$24.9 million) grant at a ceremony August 11, 2004. Some US$15.8 million of the grant will be used to improve equipment for demining work in Cambodia, while the remaining money will be used to renovate a medical school and for a vaccine project, according to a Japanese Embassy press release.
