National report card shows states "failing" to check obesity

The University of Baltimore Obesity Initiative's first national report card on state-based efforts to control obesity finds nearly half of all states failing - and another 10 just keeping pace - in an issue that is costing the United States tens of billions of dollars annually in additional healthcare, lost wages and market confusion.

If the crisis continues at this pace, according to the study's authors, the prevalence of medically defined obesity will exceed the 40% mark on a per capita basis in less than 5 years and an $80 billion annual price tag in a decade.
