Duke medical center gets $4 million to study infectious diseases in Tanzania

Duke University Medical Center will receive $4 million from the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) to study infectious diseases that AIDS patients acquire in Tanzania.

Duke said it will receive the 4-year grant through NIH's International Studies of AIDS-Associated Co-Infections program.

"This grant moves Duke to the forefront of working in international health," said Dr. John Bartlett, a Duke medical center professor focusing on infectious diseases.

The region of northeast Tanzania where work will take place has a population of about 10 million - about 10% of them living with HIV or AIDS.
