African leaders, health activists push for money to fight disease



December 12th, 2004

Four African presidents appealed November 17, 2004, for new grants from a fund set up to combat three of the world's deadliest diseases, while the United States has called for restraint in spending before new funds are raised from donor nations.

U.S. officials have been lobbying the directors of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria to suspend any future calls for grant proposals until other donor countries pay a larger share of the costs to cover funding shortfalls.

The Bush administration has cut U.S. donations to the fund from $546 million in 2004 to $200 million in 2005.
