Ontario leader says government on right track with doctors, healthcare

The Ontario government must implement its planned healthcare reforms, even if that means "taking action" with doctors who have already rejected a contract offer from the province, the former chairman of a royal commission on health said.

"It's either [compromise], or it's the end of our healthcare system," Roy Romanow said in an interview from Saskatoon.

The former Saskatchewan premier, who tabled a 2002 report on the future of healthcare in Canada, says Ontario Premier Dalton McGuinty and Health Minister George Smitherman may have no choice but to implement reforms if the province's doctors refuse to compromise in pay negotiations.
