Bird flu battle could be a long one, top Vietnamese health official

A top health official said Vietnam is gearing up to battle bird flu for the long haul as the virus picks up more momentum and strength than it had during last year's devastating outbreak, state-controlled media reported January 25, 2005.

"Compared to the first wave in 2004, the number of people infected with pneumonia caused by the H5N1 virus is not as big, but it is spreading faster and with more potency," the Youth newspaper quoted Trinh Quan Huan, director of the Ministry of Health's Preventive Medicine Department, as saying.

Nine people have died from the H5N1 strain of bird flu since December 30.
