U.N. says warnings helped avert major disease outbreak in tsunami

Immediate warnings about the threat of infectious diseases following the Indian Ocean tsunami helped prevent a major outbreak of cholera or dysentery, the U.N. health agency said January 25, 2005. In the immediate aftermath of the quake, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that as many people could die from infectious diseases as from the initial impact of the devastating waves due to the lack of clean drinking water and sanitation.
