WHO warns of increased risk of malaria, dengue fever in tsunami-hit areas

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned January 27, 2005, that Asia's tsunami-affected areas are now extremely vulnerable to mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria and dengue fever. Pools of stagnant water left over from the December 26 tsunami have created perfect conditions for mosquitoes to multiply and potentially cause severe public health problems, said Jack Chow, MD, the WHO's assistant director-general responsible for malaria.
