In 2002, suicide was the fourth leading cause of death for adults between the ages of 18 and 65 years with approximately 25,000 suicides for this age group in the United States. Attempted suicide is one of the strongest risk factors for completed suicide in adults. Previous studies have indicated that individuals who attempted suicide were about 40 times more likely to commit suicide than those who had not attempted suicide.
