A detectable plasma cytomegalovirus load at the time of CMV retinitis diagnosis is associated with mortality. According to a recently published report from the United States, "The amount of cytomegalovirus (CMV) DNA in the blood (CMV load) may be a marker for detection of resistant CMV."
