Americans believe quarantines are helpful in combating disease, but don't support tough enforcement

Most Americans favor the use of quarantine as a weapon against contagious diseases like SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome) and avian influenza ("bird flu"), but that support dries up quickly when the talk turns to strictly enforcing and monitoring the quarantines.

This is according to a new study, "Attitudes toward the use of quarantine in a public health emergency in four countries," published January 24, 2006, on the Health Affairs journal website.
