The National Law Journal Reports That Dollar Value of Top 100 Verdict Awards Rose Only 1 Percent in 2009

The National Law Journal, an ALM publication, reported that the dollar value of the VerdictSearch Top 100 verdict awards rose only 1 percent in 2009 to $8.98 billion, as many corporate clients sought to control costs by delaying the filing of lawsuits. While intellectual property litigation, the largest award class for the past two years, saw an increase from $2.2 billion to $2.6 billion last year, that result was distorted by a single massive recovery: Centocor Ortho Biotech Inc.'s $1.67 billion verdict against Abbott Laboratories.
