Dialysis patients half as likely to be treated after a heart attack

Despite a higher risk of death after a heart attack, dialysis patients are only half as likely to receive standard treatment after suffering from one, compared to the general population, according to a new study presented at the American Society of Nephrology's 37th Annual Meeting and Scientific Exposition in St. Louis.

"The difference between the treatment of dialysis and nondialysis patients appears to be based primarily on their status as dialysis patients," said lead author of the study, David Charytan, MD, a clinical and research fellow at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston.
