Foundation urges continued attempts at smoking cessation

The American Legacy Foundation says holiday stresses can make New Year's Day a tough time to follow through on a new resolution to quit smoking and believes that smokers should not pin all their hopes and aspirations on that one day to be a successful quitter.

New Year's resolutions to quit smoking are common, because 70% of the nation's 46 million smokers want to quit, and 41% made an attempt to quit for at least one day. Since most people quit 7 to 11 times before they are successful, many repeat New Year's resolutions and other attempts before they are able to quit smoking for good.
