Stark differences in care revealed at top U.S. hospitals

Striking differences exist in the care provided to dying patients by top U.S. hospitals, according to Dartmouth Medical School researchers. The findings prompt concerns about hospital reforms in Britain and elsewhere, according to the March 13, 2004, British Medical Journal (BMJ, 2004;328:607-10). Researchers identified patients attending 77 hospitals that appeared on the 2001 U.S. News and World Report "best hospitals" list for chronic illness and geriatric care.
