Insurance giant says it's fighting $50 billion in fraud

BlueCross BlueShield health-care plans nationwide are cracking down on what they say is $50 billion in insurance fraud.

A BlueCross BlueShield task force will coordinate the efforts of company investigators with local and federal law enforcers, association President Scott Serota announced April 19, 2004. The federal agencies are the FBI and the Department of Health and Human Services.

"It's a $50-billion expense that benefits no patients," Serota told the Detroit Free Press. "And it's getting bigger."
