Environmental groups, biolab reach settlement agreement

The U.S. National Institutes of Health has agreed to several safety, training and public information requirements to head off a lawsuit filed by three groups trying to halt construction of a Biosafety Level 4 lab in Hamilton.

The settlement agreement was reached late September 27, 2004.

U.S. Magistrate Carolyn Ostby oversaw the negotiations among representatives of the federal government and the Coalition for a Safe Lab, Friends of the Bitterroot and Women's Voice for the Earth.

The groups agreed to drop their current lawsuit and not to file any others against the lab without arranging for another mediation conference. The...
