Investigators outline the importance of Generally Recognized As Safe (GRAS) to the functional food and nutraceutical industries in a recent issue of the journal Toxicology. According to their report, "At a time when 150 million Americans spend over $20.5 billion on functional foods, nutraceuticals and dietary supplements, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is doing little to ensure that all the safe and efficacious products that could come to the market are allowed to do so.
