Vermont Senators call for investigation of prison mental health firms

Three state senators want Attorney General William Sorrell to investigate the conduct of firms that provide mental health services to inmates at Vermont prisons.

The request follows a report by Auditor Elizabeth Ready that showed billing errors were committed by Matrix Health Systems and Paul Cotton, MD, a Matrix employee who formed his own company and took over the mental health contract in October.

The report, released April 23, 2004, said the state paid for $141,000 worth of services it never received.
