Mental illness federal outreach program to be tested in Texas

The federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) announced that Texas will be the focus of a 3-year effort to inform the public that mental illness can be felt in almost every community, that treatment is available, and that recovery can be expected.

Educational materials aimed at increasing awareness of the stigma and discrimination often associated with mental illness will feature people who have experienced mental illness, and emphasize contributions that people with mental illnesses can make in our communities.

SAMHSA's "National Survey on Drug Use and Health" estimates that 17.5 million adults aged 18 or older had...
