Mental health advocates rally at North Carolina Legislature

Advocates for the mentally ill and disabled lobbied the North Carolina General Assembly, thanking House members for restoring cuts but asking senators to add more money.

"You need to get the message across that good services are good government," Robin Huffman, chairwoman of the advocacy group Coalition 2001, told more than 200 people at a Legislative Building rally. Disabled citizens also participated in the lobbying efforts.

The House agreed this week to a budget for next year that didn't cut as deeply into funds for mental health programs as first discussed by budget-writers.
