HIV-infected opiate abusers with ApoE4 allele may have increased dementia risk

Antioxidants protect against the neurotoxity of HIV Tat plus morphine in HIV-infected opiate abusers with the Apoliprotein E4 allele. "Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection continues to rise in drug-abusing populations and causes a dementing illness in a subset of individuals. Factors contributing to the development of dementia in this population remain unknown," scientists in the United States report. According to J.
