Vagus Nerve Stimulation Works Better as Time Passes

The first major international study of the effectiveness, safety, and tolerability of long-term vagus nerve stimulation (VNS) in controlling formerly intractable seizures shows that, with the passage of time, VNS works as well as or better than it does initially.

VNS was first reported as a treatment for epilepsy uncontrolled by medication or surgery in 1990. It involves implantation of an electrical pulse generator in the chest, linked to a stimulating lead coil implanted around the left vagus nerve in the neck.
