Assessment of Discomfort in Dementia Protocol Found Effective

Despite evidence that people with dementia experience frequent pain, which is poorly assessed and undertreated, and that the etiology for pain descriptions is poorly documented, people with dementia have often been excluded from pain studies.

A study on the effectiveness of the Assessment of Discomfort in Dementia (ADD) Protocol was published recently by C.R. Kovach and fellow researchers at Marquette University in the Journal of Pain and Symptom Management ("Assessment and treatment of discomfort for people with late-stage dementia," Journal of Pain and Symptom Management 1999; 18(6):412-419).
