CMS rejects Michigan-Vermont joint drug purchasing program

The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has rejected Michigan and Vermont's joint prescription drug purchasing program, Michigan Gov. Jennifer Granholm said February 23, 2004.

The two states were the first in the nation to pool their Medicaid drug buys in order to get lower prices from drug manufacturers. Michigan had said that the program would save millions of dollars, and other states, including New Hampshire, were considering joining the program.

Granholm told The Associated Press in an interview that she was made aware on February 20 that the CMS was rejecting the program because the states were violating procurement...
