Senate Democrats set to block Republican bill to limit lawsuits



March 15th, 2004

Senate Democrats on February 24, 2004, blocked the latest Republican effort to curb medical malpractice lawsuits, but Republicans who say the bill is crucial to the availability of healthcare promised the issue would return later in the year.

"We're going to keep going until we succeed," said Sen. Elizabeth Dole, R-NC, as the Republican lost a vote to force Democrats to consider a bill curbing medical malpractice damages against obstetricians and gynecologists.

It takes 60 votes to force senators to consider a bill but Republicans were not able to reach that goal in the 48-45 vote.
